Is there a way to find if a product or trading name has been registered without spending money to do so?

Basically, someone has come up with a product, and a name for it, but there is concern that the name is similar to others or may be already being used - how can she find out?

lol, no, this is for someone on another forum with a child-related product. I have definitely heard of the product idea before, and have been googling and found many similar names, so we were wondering if there was a way to find out about products and names already registered
