cheapo solicitor required
Discussion
i need a lawyer in north london who can tick a box for me, saying that we have had legal advice regarding a personal guarantee on a bank overdraft. my bank manager has told me that a provincial lawyer should be able to do it for £50 per person, but our normal lawyers, based in Islington want £250 each(!!!!). Any recommendations for someone cheap? PS, I don't really want the legal advice, since it's just for a temporary overdraft to Cover a VAT payment, so it won't take up a lot of anyone's time.

But how long would it take to give the advice?
"If you dont pay your overdraft back you owe the dosh personally and could lose your house etc"
5 mins work - £50 please, sounds ok to me?

Nope sorry not that simple. The lawyer would firstly almost certainly have to go through the money laundering proceedures just to set you up as a client (£250-£300) even if you're not giving them money, then would have to read all the documentation in full - say 1 hour £160 minimum in Bristol then advise you on it - half an hour.
Sadly too many people sue at a later date when their (usually ex) husband/wife/partner/[complete as you fancy]'s business goes tits up and they lose everything. Lenders ask for the confirmation that you've been independantly advised so that THEY have someone else to sue when it all goes wrong.
Sounds to me like your own solicitor is quoting a good figure but presumably they won't advise all of you? Everyone involved will need their own solicitor.
Cheapo solicitor?
Does not compute; divide by zero error
Seriously though, everything Piglet says is right. There have been too many cases of people coming back and blaming their lawyers when something goes wrong and the lawyer has to establish that they have advised on every aspect. There are no short cuts and more solicitors have been caught out doing favours for friends than you could imagine.
If something is worth doing then it is worth doing properly.
