Hey folks !

My fiancee has just had to leave her company in order to return home to deal with some family problems that she is experiencing. It is highly unlikely that she will be able to return in the near future, and as such, she has requested that the company release her from her contract. Obviously, due to the sudden nature of her departure, she has been unable to officially hand in any notice, nor work any notice period.

As a result of this, can the company give her a bad reference for future employment ? confused

Any help you can give is much appreciated !

The can't give her a bad reference, but they can give her a very terse and factual one that another employer may read between the lines on.

I presume your fiancee has exhausted all avenues with her current employer over compassionate leave, unpaid leave, etc.?

Yes, she did take a couple of days off a few weeks ago, but after she explained her reasons to them, they made her take the time out of her holiday entitlement - which seemed a bit harsh to me !

Whislt she has been there though, she's been punctual (often early!) and has never left early, or taken longer than her hour's lunch. She has also reliably completed all her work targets everyday.

We had hoped that the problems had been sorted out back then, but they have just resurfaced, and she doesn't want to come away again until she's sure that all is well.

If it makes any sort of difference, she is only on a temporary contract at present.
