Following on from the business accounting software thread, does anybody here use any of the personal accounting software packages kicking around?

I tried microsoft money a while back, but managed to get myself into a total muddle as I couldn't get it to start me at "today" with the current balances in my bank accounts. Downloading all my past statements and dropping them into Money seemed to totally screw it up. I don't need all that historical info, but it would be nice to have and even nicer to just be able to download my statement each month and drop it in. However doing that seemed to put my bank account at minus 10 grand! I'm not a computer numpty by any means (I used to make my living designing and testing corporate financial software ), but I just didn't get what was going on.

What i'm really looking for is some projections, if I saved this much extra into this account, or paid this much more into the mortgage I will be in this possition in 5 years time, that sort of thing.

Oh, and free would be good

Do it yourself in Excel or Access (Excel will be easier, but is more likely to run out of space in the future).

I had something set up that would let me return the balance at the end of any particular day given the list of transactions, and would let me search for total spend / income on any reference. Projections would be easy enough to do I guess, set a variable that is "current months change" and then add in x number of steps of that value to the balance, et voila.

Have a bash, but give us a shout if you want a hand.

You'd need a hell of a lot of activity to run out of space in Excel!

Neil, dunno if this is the sort of thing you are after (maybe too much?)

What about 'Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2007'? www.ideawins.com/

I know noting about this software, just remembered seeing a link to it the other day when downloading IE7. Free download (though 340mbs IIRC)

Just want someone to download it and tell me its good before doing it myself
