Salary payments

I feel a bit daft asking this as I already have my own limited company, but it relates to something I've not done yet.

I'm thinking of setting up a new limited company with a friend of mine, but I know that to begin with we won't make enough money to pay even a minimum wage to either one of us. We both have other sources of income, so that in itself is not an issue. My question is can we still operate as Directors without receiving any form of renumeration?
