Not having the best week. Wrote to Mrs leftie saying they owed her £170 from 2004/5. Then wrote saying that was wrong, she owed them £150, but it would be carried forward into 2005/6 ( I presume they are doing a full set). Then sent her a cheque for £170 a day later. Then they wrote to her brother saying he owed £700 from 2005/6, when he had expected about £200 from additional income. Seems they had ignored his cover letter outlining his mileage to set against the earnings.
I think perhaps they have money inputters from the monkey agency trying to clear the bag log of self assessments? Although I do wonder where Mrs Leftie's papers have been since 2004/5.

sad because once the loss of confidence sets in people will be even more inclined to chalenge = more work for them. I am not at all confident they get assessments right and depend upon my accountant to ensure it is right. If this deskilling continues it may be the catalyst to simplify the system.

It will never happen. It is very hard to undo 200 years of successive tax legislation. Indeed, Chancellors prefer the complexity as they can hide all sorts of poltically motivated tax changes in the morass without the non tax-specialist noticing or realising the impact. Why change such a useful atribute?

Yep - many of the local offices are closing, with 'customer' contact being done in call centres, usually with brand-new staff. Next stop India - some of National Savings work has been privatised and has already moved there.
