IP phone systems
Discussion
Have a look at Swyx www.swyx.com/uk/ . I know a couple companies who have got these systems and they are very impressed.

Pugwash, drop me a mail through my profile, I might be able to help you / provide some advice etc.
Not sure how sophisticated a system you require but I can't recommend the Televantage software phone system highly enough:
www.vertical.com/products-televantage.html
It runs all of my businesses (www.thebarcodewarehouse.co.uk/) phone systems, including the call center; version 7 includes VoIP support. Our system was installed by a company called Intramation:
www.intramation.co.uk/
Give Darren there a call...he's a fantastic guy.

Small world indeed, so do we!
My employer (local authority) uses one type/brand of IP "digital phones" (am I allowed to name names, as I'm not going to be complementary?), not one of those named above.
Apart from the fact that on the 'helpdesk' I used to work on it is all-but impossible to speak to anyone if they are using a mobile phone, and regular 'daleking' (we get an echo of our voices while the other party hears a 'dalek' squawking at them) the incidence of which no-one seems to be able to reduce to an vaguely acceptable level, they are probably fine!
From my experience with this particular system (not one of those named above) I shouldn't bother.

I work for this lot www.southern-comms.co.uk selling Telephone systems and Call Centres, Voip can be fantastic providing you have the right business model. However although getting it to work most of the time is not difficult or expensive, getting it to work all of the time is. The speech quality you have is entirely dependant on the IT Infrastructure you run it over. I have lost count of the amount of people who I have been to see who want to run dozens of IP Phones over a vpn on an ADSL.
When BT's 21CN network comes on line I think it will increase the take up of voip markedly, at present probably 80% of people I see ask about having VOIP only about 20% of people actually do it now after working out a cost versus benefit.

This really must be a popular site. I found out that one of my employees uses it the other day too!
Anyway, many thanks for both of your business. Any custom is always very much appreciated!
Ross
Agreed, you need to have the right business profile and the right reasons for doing it (toll bypass is right down the list now as minutes are so cheap these days). Also totally agree 100% that if your network infrastructure is not up to it then you will end up with crap voice quality.
I work directly for a large manufacturer (global no1) if you are in the large corporate space and want to chat independant of a dealer/channel drop me a line.

Ian, I was going to pm you but I don't seem to be able to, what is it you do for Avaya? feel free to email me rather than post if you would rather.
apologies for the partial hijack.
Agree entirely voice quality won't exist without a decent network to run it on I like to think of it a bit like having a gorgeous TVR/Porsche/Ferrari and then trying to run it down a dirt track, it is not going to be a pleasant experience and won't be indicative of their true potential.
