Forms for exporting

If we're sending a quantity of goods out of the country (above normal postal orders) is there a form we are to fill in to notify customs? I seem to remember some form filling years ago but haven't really exported since.

When I have used couriers for this in the past you fill in the export form online or they bring it to your door.

This was the case with Parcelforce and UPS.
