Whats the basic info required at companies house for filling accounts?

I'm sure a small company (eg less than £100k t/o) can file abbreviated accounts, but need to see an example.

Help.

Abbreviated Accounts can only be completed in ADDITION to Full Format Accounts. In other words, the Full Set has to be prepared in all cases. Companies House are happy to receive Abbreviated Accounts, HMRC require the Full Accounts and will not accept Abbreviated Accounts.

I'll try and e-mail you an example of what Abbreviated Accounts look like if you want.

I presume that you have an accountant working for you at the moment because I can absolutely guarantee that non-accountants cannot realistically be expected to prepare limited company accounts that comply with Companies Act requirements.

cheers.

the problem i've got is that the company secretary who is also the accountant for this particular company is just about useless. and last week he decided "that because the way the business was being run I have to resign".

when I got back (today), i find that the reason for his resignation is because Companies House sent a threatening letter regarding late accounts - the accounts hes meant to of done some time ago. he has all the wretched information, just can't be arsed to finish them off. whenever you call him "i'll get them finished this friday - i promise" etc.

anyway, i have a call into Companies House on monday to explain that accounts are on their way, and we'll finish off the accounts ourselves. we'll deal with Inland Revenue when we've got Companies House off our back. I'm hoping we can get the accounts submitted in an abbreviated form to get them off our back, and then to send them to our usual accountant to make sure they are okay, restate any corrections, and then sort out the revenue.

sigh.

The trouble is that the Abbreviated Accounts can't really be prepared until the full set is virtually finalised.

Best of luck.

If he ran away at the sight of one of those letters, both you and him are better off out of it

As Eric Mc said, you still need the accounts done to get the abbreviated set....

How on earth are you hoping to prepare a set of accounts and send them to your usual accountants for 'approval' ? eek Take my advice - find a new accountant, asap. Get your acounts done, then move on from there....

Time to consider a new career, I think.

I've always fancied being an astronaut. I wonder are there any openings at NASA for bald 48 year olds with no technical or scientific training.

Any reason for NASA specifically? I'm sure they don't have hair resrictions :scratchin: [if they did, I'd be out for being blonde].

I know a fair few accountants who have given this whole lark up and turned to being taxi drivers, shop assistants, plumbers, etc due to the amount of insane irked and inane carp one now has to deal with. I myself have even toyed with the rebelling, leaving the profession, and becoming a driver, although the opportunities in the accounting sector keep me around for now.

If you get to NASA, you can be the accounts God there *Eric Mc in Space*

Somehow, I don't think the ability to Debit and Credit In Zero G is much required at the moment.

If you spot my other posts in other areas of PH you'll tealise that I am a bit of a space and aviation freak. Keeps me sane amidst all the pressures of Self Assessment deadlines and "impossible to meet" compliance requirements of being a practising accountant.

Um... what's the difference between full and abbreviated? I normally send over a P&L and Balance Sheet and they haven't complained.

Sounds like you are not complying with the legal requirements then. Fortunately, you are lucky in the sense that the staff at Companies House are totally incompetent and regularly accept accounts that are woefully short of the legal minima.

To know what is required, you need to acquaint yourself with Schedule 8 of the Companies Act 1985 and you should also be totally conversant with the requirements of the Financial Reporting Requirements for Smaller Entities (the FRSSE) as set out by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

My intention has always been to get these accounts done by him, and then fire him. Not the other way round. This guy certainly wasn't in any future plans, and was someone we picked up on the way when we took over another company.

Companies House (on a previous matter) have even advised me to report him to his professional body for incompetance, unfortunately, his professional body kicked him out a couple of years ago. For being incompetant. Hence wanting this last set of accounts out of him, and moving on.

Best laid plans....

Dunno, I heard there was a research position looking for somebody to do double entry in Mir....but maybe I misheard, didn't catch the phone number for applications I'm afraid.

Obviously not required now since Mir re-entered and burned up 4 or 5 years ago.
