This might be a silly question, but can anything be done to ease the pain of inheritance tax after the person has died?

A deed of variation can be useful, so long as all the beneficiaries agree you can effectively change the will within 2 years of death, which can be very good from a tax perspective, especially longer term. I.e. direct assets to younger beneficiaries rather than an elderly relative.
