Good old BT have sent someone in to see me.

We have a couple of analogue phone lines, linked to a old Meridian Norstar system, plus a broadband analogue line and an analogue fax line.

I'm told that we can't get parts for the Norstar anymore and should change our two main phone lines for Digital and up grade the phone system for about £1,600.

The cost isn't a problem but I'm just not sure if this change is necessary. They also tell me that both the fax and broadband lines should remain analogue for the time being.

Oh,the fax line also has our alarm connected to it for linking to the control station.

I'm confused!

Check if it's BT or BT Local Business - BT Local Business seem to be out to sell whatever they can to whoever they can. I'd recommend speaking to a phone system specialist as it sounds like they're yanking your chain and just after an easy sale.

BTLB claim lots of things... I've banned them from my place completely

PM me if you want a recommendation of a really good Nortel reseller / installer.

Ah, this makes sense. Knowing I'm in the business my pal has just been on the phone with the same tale, although the numbers involved there were somewhat larger. Seems like someone's out there inventing "reasons to buy".

If your existing system meets your requirement then you don't need to change. You just need to find someone to support your kit if BT won't, and chances are they aren't even aware of what this BTLB is doing.

I see you are in Cheshire. If you want some local friendly advice then don't hesitate to get in touch. We're in Knutsford.
