There is a piece of land close to my house which is owned by the Council.

I would be extremely interested in purchasing this land, however, have no idea on how I would go about doing this.

Who (which department) would I need to speak to at said council ?

I'd speak to either the planning department or the estates department. If youhave problems with them I'd go through to their legals dept.

Estates department would be the best bet. Planning department would not be making the decisions on disposals

I did the same a while ago over an old school site

Found out that it was being bundled with a larger area and Barclay Homes were buying it

Be aware that Council's are obliged to obtain best value so if you want to bid they may decide to offer it on the open market

To be honest I haven't heard of councils just agreeing to sell land to an individual without going to the open market like Bill's nemesis found out.

Unless, that is you own a ransom strip between the council's land and the road which would sort of force them to only deal with you but I don't think that's the case in this instance.

My towns council have a reputation for selling pretty much anything that will make revenue.

But it is normally to developers and not individuals. I suppose you could start a property developing business!
