I have a guy working for me who has to delegate work to contractors on a day by day basis. He is starting to irritate them by his pomposity, acting as though he is there to teach them their jobs. The trouble is that I knew someone else who did the same thing, and after it was brought up in his appraisal he simply made a big show of 'allowing' his 'inferiors' to make suggestions. He was more patronising than ever.
Any suggestions as to how best to tackle this?

My guess is that th egut has a problem with feeling really comfortable in his job and therefore is over compensating for his insecurity - not that he'll ever admit that. Strange though it sounds he needs his confidence building so that he can accept advice without seeing it as a threat.
He also needs to recognise that people see him as pompous and unapproachable and to understand that there are other wasy to deal with the people who will ultimately bring him his successes
Some training in self presentation or coaching might help.
