Long story, but two companies I took over a couple of years ago, each got a £1,000 fine for late filing from IR. Its a long story but they were accounts that were unfiled before we took over, and was left to the director who stayed on when we took over. He didn't lift a finger, the original cosec (also the accountant) didn't lift a finger, and we only found out they were unfiled when the cosec resigned unexpectedly, which coincided with a letter from IR on my desk.

Spent two months sorting the accounts out (as we had to reconstruct from scratch), sent them to IR and got a fine for each company.

Anyway, we sent in a letter blaming the dead director, and the resigned cosec, and they reduced the fine to £0 for both companies this morning! Result.

Maybe there is a God after all wink

The Revenue (no IR these days - they ceased to exist two years ago) are at liberty to reduce most penalties if the tax payer has a reasoonable excuse and is co-operative. You sound like you qualified onm both counts..
