I need three desktop PCs for an office, linked up via a Server. Yes, it's for an office, I'd like them to look quite nice, but they can be built by someone, as long as they look quite nice. I'm price senstive, after being quoted £3,000.00 for a "mid range" option, by Dell, who are "cheap". I'm sure that I can do better?!?

Or maybe not? That includes Windows Vista Basic/MS Office preloaded on all 3 machines, and a backup device, so not grossly unreasonable, but you know, I could buy a CAR for £3,000, so the price makes me baulk! (sic?)

Please PM me if you can quote me

Regards,

Richard

Does the Dell price include the Server?

Crazed Linux Zealot mode.

If you got the same hardware, but with a
different operating system that could read
and write all the Microsoft data formats
with ease, had all the Word Processing, Spreadsheet
and database software you could eat, and was let's say
five hundred quid cheaper than the Dell/Microsoft
solution, would you be interested ?

I almost forgot: Factor in free operating system upgrades
for the next few years as well.

Just a thought.

Probably not, cos that's still £2,500 and whilst I could cope with the software, I would no doubt have staff moaning bitterly that it doesn't have the dreaded MS Windows etc! Oh well!

IMHO for 3 PC's, a Server I guess running Small Business 2003 and a backup solution, mice, keyboards and monitors 3k all in doesn't seem over priced infact I think it's pretty good, as said you could get the price down using open source software but there would be some faff at the beginning as they are not always easy to install and some have dependencies on other software that would need installing.

See my reply to your other topic. 3k including the 3 pc's is a very good price if it includes installation and configuration on site. If it is supply only then it depends on the spec of the PC's.

One thing wrong with the Dell quote however is that you need Vista business edition to connect to a server which is a domain controller. It would be unusual not to have your server configured as a domain controller.

If Dell are telling you that's a 'mid range' solution I'd love to know what they'd call 'entry level'.

Seriously, if they're quoting you £3k for a server + software, 3 PCs, monitors and 3 copies of MS Office that is extremely competetive. I do have a sneaky suspicion that that figure may exclude the mandatory £50 delivery per unit, 3 year support upgrade, on-site installation charges and a backup solution, but do correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm also wondering if that price means that it'll be small business server, small hard drives, no anti virus solution, a cheap backup drive with no media and basic office package.

Change of plan at the moment. PCs proving too expensive at the moment. Thanks for the help so far, but Derek, I'll be in touch with you in due course, as the business grows further, thanks,

Have a look at http://www1.serversource.co.uk/ I find you are best giving them a phone call. They sell reconditioned Dell products but I would never have noticed they were not brand new. They will also do 3 year warranties and seem to stock all of the latest Dell stuff.
