Best place to invest approximately £80k

I will have my hands on the above sum soon due to sale of some land I inherited, however I'm not in the position to be buying a property yet due to my job. I want to invest the money so that it makes a tidy amount of interest each year, and I'm sure there's probably something better than the 5% offered my most high street banks, but not knowing about all of this investment malarkey I'm looking to PH for advice.... Any welcome!

Most internet savings acounts are paying around 5.7-6.0% gross at the moment which is bugger all really....
