Hired a car about three months ago. Need to do same today and Mr Car Hire Company pulls up my 'history' [okaaaaay] and asks, shall I put it on the card, 1234 5678 9876 5432?

yikes

He tells me that it is standard for car hire firms to keep card details in case of motoring fines or charges, but three months?

Standard? Is it?

Standard on many websites too.

Can be useful but on the whole unless it's for a service I use regularly and I choose to save my details I'm well against it. Could be a breach of DPA too. If you have a look through their T's & C's or privacy policy it'll probably be outlined there.
