I'm involved with a local organstion which will [hopefully] be a registered charity by the end of the year.

We've had limited success in terms of fundraising from various sources (i.e. HLF, etc..) I'm thinking that maybe it is time we invested in a part time professional fundraiser to help us a bit. Probably just 1 - 2 days per week.

Just wondering if anyone had any any experience of this direction and what the pitfalls are.

Many thanks

Doing the same thing - I'm involved with a project to build a major new community centre/church in our village as well as open up fields to gain access to a historic monument. Estimated budget is around £3m!! (Church is seperate entity although physically joined, CofE paying for this bit).

Couple of pointers we've found useful:

1. Get the support of the local Parish or Town Council. Adds weight to any grant application and they can also channel money into a "development fund". In our case, they are paying for the sort of people that you mention. Although they have limited power, they can influence to a degree things like planning and wider borough/district council support

2. Join Community Matters (http://www.communitymatters.org.uk/). Very good, useful organisation

3. Contact your local Business Link. They have sections on community projects and good networks of handy to know people.

4. Be careful what funding you go after. Some is readily available but carries with it criteria that is unworkable within the vision of you project.

5. Get the community / local residents on board - keep them informed.

Good luck!
