How do I invest in a fund?
Discussion
Well pretty much as the question - I'm interested in investing in a fund in that deals in Chinese stocks. Can anyone tell me how I'd go about doing it ?
I had a share ISA and that didn't perform too badly - I want to invest in a Chinese fund though as they seem to have some pretty impressive growth.
Some idea of how easy/hard it is to get in/out of the funds would be appreciated

You could set up an account with an online broker e.g. selftrade. The look up the fund you are interested in. With these guys you often get a big dicsount on the initial fee too.
Same process for buying and selling as for any stock really.
There are some good ones covering HK at the moment.

From what you say I assume I can buy more/sell off my investment at any point throughout - also what are the implications with regard to tax on any profits ? - ie are they discounted at source is fat gordon going to take a hefty chunk etc
The discount is off the intial fee for buying the fund. So instead of paying say 4%, you pay 1%. Most funds charge an initial fee, then an annual management fee. Yes you can buy and sell to your hearts content.
By the way you might consider an ETF covering the Chinese/ HK market. These are stamp duty expemt and IIRC Selftrade don't charge a dealing fee on them.
( and ETF is a type of fund that tracks an index or underlying, they can go in your ISA )
Any gains taken will be part of your £9.3k annual allowance, unless it's in an ISA of course.
Self Trade offer a reduced intial and annual managemnet fee, but don't have a full range of funds available (e.g. I wanted the Jupiter China fund). I presume they have negotiated a reduction in fees only for certain funds?
I went direct to the Jupiter fund via their web site and invested from there but also have a Self Trade account for investing in China via the Gartmore China account.
Both are aggressive funds and for me are a bit of 'mad money' but the Jupiter has seen 15% growth in 2 months.
BTW SE Asia markets, in common with the FTSE have taken a kicking today I think.

with regard to the markets taking a kicking - 'm still undecided over the 'current' state of affairs, as to whether it will mean a 'correction' in prices or whether everything is going to keep going towards the sky.
Does anyone have any resources where you can compare how different funds have performed against each other in the short/medium term... some graphs would be good before picking which to invest in

Gordo, I've got both the Gartmore and Jupiter China purchased thru Selftrade.I went direct to the Jupiter fund via their web site and invested from there but also have a Self Trade account for investing in China via the Gartmore China account.

From the front page go to Market Focus, then Fund Focus, then select Jupiter from the pulldown box, then "Available Funds". There's a trade option if it's got a green/yellow tick against it
I've been lucky with these 2, bought at the start of the year and up approx 75% to 85% each since then. Like you I look for aggressive funds and JP Morgan Natural Resources is another good one for me (currently up 25.5% in 7 weeks, although I'm under no illusions about that being a representative gain)
I'm turning my attention to an Africa fund now, specifically New Star Heart Of Africa which is currently getting launched. If anyone has any thoughts on it's prospects I'd be interested

I think there's huge potential. Moneyweek ran a good focus article on the potential for Africa a few weeks back. They also tipped Lonhro as a way of getting exposure to the continent.

New Star heart might be a bit rich/risky for me as the minimum investmnet is £12.5K
Yep, me too, but I'm hoping Selftrade have their usual £1k or £500 minimum regardless. I emailed them last week to check this but they've not replied yetGordon Brown said:

The Mail On Sunday yesterday (strangely enough) had a small article on this fund and others, but the others all had a bias to South Africa. Another fund will be along soon enough I hope

A large minimum investment is often put in to discourage private investors w=for whom it is considered too high risk. It tends to be suggestive of a product designed for people who are pretty up on what they are doing.Gassing Station | Business | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
