Discussion
Not sure if this is the right forum but I am looking to create a website and wondered if there are any recommended off the shelf types that can be tailored or if there are any diy software tools to help you create your own from scratch - (would prefer some templates to see!). Also does anybody know of a good/cheapish host? Not expecting a gazillion transactions, more informative at this stage.
Cheers

Ronald - check out Register1 - a hosting company owned by a PHer (Jamie Beeston) and used by about 75+ fellow PHers - all of whom recommend him - see here: http://www.oilypages.com/recommendations.asp?id=53...
I've got about 12 sites with him - and in the 3+ years - it's been pure bliss and REAL support

If you want to do it properly, save your time and pay someone to do a proper job for you.
DIY stuff usually looks very, DIY. You'll struggle to get good results and unlikely to generate much business through it. It must be said that just paying for a decent website doesn’t guarantee a ROI if your business is flawed, so testing the water isn't a bad idea if you are not sure.
If you want a cheap DIY solution you could try www.mrsite.co.uk, they charge a mere £34.99 and have a range of templates. We've re-built a few sites that were first made on this (when people hit the barriers and wanted a proper solution) but if you have no budget and just want to knock something up, it’s probably your best bet.

I work for an IT services company and direct our customers looking for a basic website to this comapany's portfolio page:
http://www.aspect-marketing.co.uk/portfolio_wd.sht...
They do off the shelf websites bundled with hosting and webmail/pop3 access (as do many other firms out there).

hehe we're actually used by several hundred PH'rs, only 7x+ have clicked the 'recommended' link
Ronald, check my profile, then drop me a mail with any queries you have.
I've got designers who'll do a stunning job for a reasonable amount too.
