I'm looking at options for raising some capital for a business venture. I've been trying to finance it by selling my house and moving into rental property, thus releasing the equity. However, the market is 'dormant' to say the least, so looking at other options. Now I really beleive in the business idea that I am putting together, and am willing to do what it takes to suceed. However, the other half is really reluctant in supporting me in borrowing the substantial money I need by tying it against the house.

So I'm looking for advise on how to raise the captial needed, and someone suggested looking for a so called 'business angel' to invest in the idea. Can anyone explain how this works and whether its viable? I have a great idea but equally dont want to sell my soul to the devil (or should that be a 'dragon'...). i also dont want to publise the idea as I cant protect it but I can enter a virtually vacant market place with this.

Also business grants. I'm too old for princes' trust kind of thing, and most of them seem geared at helping already established businesses get along with further investment.

How do I get this started? Should I be borrowing the capital (I need a substantial start up amount - probably about £100k for some hi tech equipement) but my operating costs then are very low compared to the return. I've tried my best with selling the house but its stalled because of the market. I'm not way over price, just nothing is selling in my area.

You could probably borrow, but that would involve securing any borrowings against your house anyway. I don't know how much you earn and what mortgage you have, but is it possible to just release equity in the house based on earnings, and start the business alongside your current job?

A business angel might be helpful, I don't know, but they will want a stake in the business, I guess they will operate like dragons den, but without the arrogance and bravado, and hopefully without one twit saying "why should I give you my childrens' inheritance"

Another option, family and friends investing? It's always dangerous mixing friends and business, but i've seen it work. You need to be 100% open with them though.

Other than that I wouldn't know where to start.

I've got contacts who are continually looking for interesting business ideas, myself included. If you'd like me to take a look at the business model you're proposing I'd be happy to give you advice and point you in the right direction. Needless-to-say, I'm happy to sign and NDA / non-compete clause. Where abouts are you located?

Thanks for the offer. Located in Hampshire. Got a lot of ground work still to do but would appreciate an outside opinion.

Thanks
