Online Debit Card Processing

If I buy a car in a dealership using a debit card then when they process it, the PDQ machine will make them ring for authorisation and I'll have to speak to an operator to prove I'm really me.

If - theoretically - I was trying to take a very large payment online via a debit card, what happens then?

All depends, many online processors like protx (which i use) run 3D authentication now, which will give additional authentication, but often in the case of a "call to confirm" type scenario then online you will get a simple declined

The CC processor will send back a different status code to request the customer is called. If the site is any good it'll get passed to a real person to do just that, but I suspect most online businesses just decline the card.

Protx dont pass a different code back, all we see is the decline

I've not used Protx, but we get a "Referral" response back from Payflow Pro in these circumstances.

Do you happen to know if you get many chargebacks against debit cards?

Not one in the past year of trading (credit cards included).

i tried to buy a large shed/summerhouse type of thing online with my debit card .it was an unusual purchase as i spend very little on that card usually,beer fags etc.the transaction was declined.when i called them it went through fine
