Hello

Now comes the part where I need to get an accountant on board, as part of my start up business.

I am very switched on when it comes to keeping a track of day to day personal finances, and I intend to operate a similar approach to the business side of things.

What other aspects of business finance/accountancy do I need to take care of? As I mentioned, I am more than happy and capable of keeping a day to day record of all transactions etc but I need to know what other things I will need to do or get an accountant to do.

I am assuming that start ups usually have an "on call" accountant, who can do tax returns, annual accounts etc and answer random questions.

My questions are:

What sort of things will i need an accountant to take care of?
What should I be doing myself?
How much do they cost?
Can anyone recommend a suitable person in Devon? (I presume I need to have someone local that I can meet up with face to face once a while?)

Thanks in advance

Max

That is basically what I had in mind.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your arrangement with your accountant? Is it on an adhoc basis with the obligatory yearly meeting to discuss accounts?

Do you pay a regular amount each month, or is it based on what services and advice/time he/she provides you?

Any info would be very useful and much appreciated

I pay adhoc as opposed to retained, it's quarterly billed based on time and the value is depending on what's need to be done in the previous period. I am quite local to my accountant and we communicate over mail and phone as and when needed.
