Still trying to find myself a new form of employment/direction in life, I stumbled upon this job recently:

Trainee Account Manager

This is an opportunity to develop a skill set in a large and rapidly expanding market, achieve rapid progression and make a significant contribution to our growth.

The successful candidate will be required to:

Liaise with clients and manage there campaigns on a day-to-day basis.
Train for, and achieve Qualified Google Advertising Professional status and equivalent qualifications
Become highly knowledgeable in the field of pay-per-click search engines
Develop strong relationships with the pay-per-click providers account managers
Analyse and improve performance of accounts
Write advert copy
Develop knowledge and expertise in PPC display advertising (e.g. Googles content network) and develop a sub-product and business plan for Attacat
As we are a small business it is inevitable that the successful candidate will be required to get involved in a variety of other tasks.
Help expand the business in general
The successful candidate will:

Have Common Sense and Initiative
Have good interpersonal skills
Have a basic grasp of statistics and be able to use Excel
Be educated to degree level at least 2:1 (Possible degrees: Generalist subjects such as Geography & History, Marketing, especially direct marketing, Sciences including Social Sciences)

In the end I didn't actually get it (they gave it to someone with experience, even though they said they specifically didn't want any experience) but I'm quite interested in learning more about it so I can get a job with another agency or go out on my own doing it.

I know there are a few experts on here so I’m looking for some suggestions on what to do next. The plan at the moment goes along the lines of: buy a couple of books from Amazon, read as many relevant websites as I can find and study what the different agencies offer. After I've built up a decent knowledge then I'll email agencies and/or look for web designers that might like to offer extra services. Anything else I should be adding to this list?

I should probably add that I'm really not into web design at all and have very little knowledge of HTML etc.

Thanks for the help!

If you want to get the Adwords certification, you'll need to create an account and spend some money with them, the grabbing b***ards! This is a pre-req for getting certified, but I can't remember how much cash you need to spend with them.

My think was that if I know what i'm doing then I can still do the work until I can pass certification. If I was doing it on my own then I'd probably do some freebies to get more experience and get some initial customers....

I don't think you need to buy any books, there is a wealth of information online.
There are a huge amount of sites and guides out there....too many perhaps! The hardest thing is deciding which ones give the best advice and information - reading bad ones is only going reduce my competency. If you know of any particularly good sources then please post them up or PM them to me.

I hope to learn this quickly and get out there putting it into practice!
