I am very interested in opening a company specialising in private car registrations.

Can anyone guide me on what I need to do with regards to registering with the DVLA etc?

Haha - I would have thought it would be an affiliate sceme of sorts. IE - you sell the plate through DVLA and they give you a commission though I have nothing to base this on.

Sounds like an interesting idea though. If you want to chat about marketing ideas or branding please PM me.

There are a few people that do this both big and small companies in the back of Autotrader and Top Marques.

My more general advice is that these things have a relatively high monetary value but zero intrinsic value. Therefore there is much more demand when people have money to burn, yet when money is tight it is the last thing they would buy!

I would therefore suggest that the market is getting smaller and values are dropping.

All is not lost however, as with many similar markets, if you are in the right place at the right time with cash with someone desperate to sell you can pick up something for a lot less than what someone else might value it at.

My worry is that it will be tying up a lot of cash in something which has no intrinsic value, and the scope to lose out big time is large.

But I get the impression that the companies advertising these plates don't necessarially own them. They may have a contract with the actual owner to act as agent with regard to the sale, but they don't appear to own them.

The owner of the plate can presumably contract with many number plate agencies to sell the plate.

I have sold a couple of plates before.

The companies advertised them and only bought when they were sold orders.
Pretty simple business model - you just need to get enough reg's on your books.

Try google and search DVLA or private registration reselling and it should come up with something of interest.
