I'm about to migrate from BT to Opal for our landline calls / lines, around 10% cheaper, one point of contact, and seem like good guys.

Does anyone have experience of them before I sign on the dotted line next week?

Opal are part of the CPW group of companies. Only dealings I've had, have been trying to get things fixed when they've broken them, and that was a thankless and fruitless task.

We migrated away from them recently because of exceptionally bad service. We wouldn't use then again.

At the commodity end of the market (is there another end?) other than price you are really only comparing the softer elements e.g. account management, billing accuracy/convenience and the support experience. Unless the provider has their own network and you happen to be on net the lines will be provided for the supplier by BT using WLR (Wholesale Line Rental). This also means that faults and requests for changes in the network will be handled by the supplier but backed off to BT. Some are better than others at this activity.

Unless you need a deal for new lines to be installed FOC then I recommend you go with a 12 month contract and review again at that point. Keep things fairly flexible as there will be lots of changes in the next few years.

I have just gone with XLN and had no problems so far, and very reasonable on cost from what I can see.

Afternoon guys,

As you can see already from some of the posts above, Telecoms is incredibly competitive.

I have personal experience of Opal and i can only say positive things. FYI they do own their own network, granted not the copper up to the door but they do have one of the largest and most sophisticated intelligent networks around.

I have seen savings over over 20% with ease and the account management is dedicated and specific to the organisation.

Plus with all the small resellers and dealers out there, having someone with the financial backing of a Plc like CPW is no bad thing.

Dont listen to the hype, everyone has their own agenda, give Opal a try and i am sure you will be happy

IMO the voice minutes market has become like the IT market. With the major difference that use of the channel doesn't really dilute the quality of the end product delivered or the ongoing support experience the customer would receive. It's the same voice minute whether you buy it from a friendly local dealer or the service provider directly. Pretty much the same support mechanism is in place. Minor differences in reseller/dealer billing models and pricing structures will be there but it's hardly the stuff of USPs.

Where USPs do exist is in distributors who aggregate multiple services from multiple providers into single bill solutions and allow dealers/resellers to be agile and have a wide portfolio without major investment or multiple (usually complex to administer) supply chains. Add in telecoms hardware, software and the wide range of other services a savvy integrator will provide and the case for dealing direct becomes even weaker.

It wasn't very intelligent networking when they blocked access to about 20-30 content providers for days and didn't know about it and didn't respond to emails/calls about the issue smile As you say though, everyone has their own agenda, you included I thinkwink
