My girlfriend's brother wants a job with me over the summer. His duties will be a bit of basic software testing, writing some documentation and general dogsbodying.

Any idea what I should be paying him? He's 18 and is between A-Levels and first year University. I'm thinking around £1000 per month.

Cheers for any help.

Sounds about right to me: £6.25p a hour although they will pay Tax and Ni on that and you will have employers NI. There is a scheme for students whereby you donlt have all the registration, Tax and Ni issues if they are students working in the holidays and donl;t have to deduct tax of they earn under £6k. I used to employ students on an ad hoc basis with that system. Much easier.

Excellent, thanks for that.

My summer placement pays £7.35p/h and I also had an offer from another offering the same. I would have been happy with £6.50p/h and would've taken £5.50+p/h if there was nothing else.

So assuming he starts next week thats 3 months.

I think £800 a month plus a bonus scheme which will net him £1000 on his last day if everything on his list is achieved and works.

Get your girlfriend to arbitrate on that, with a weekly review of progress by her, so that he gets the bonus but only by working his arse off.

I was thinking something similar. If he works well then we'll give him a few extra quid at the end. And then make him buy me drinks for the rest of his life.

Thanks for your input guys.
