Why no evening deliveries
Discussion
I don't recall ever seeing any delivery services which operate in the evening. Maybe I'm missing something, but surely any service in this time-slot would be very attractive to people expecting deliveries. Personally I'm in a situation where I'd either have to take a day off work (because that's generally as accurate as delivery companies can be IME) or faff around asking neighbours to accept something, which isn't ideal. I can't get stuff delivered to work. So an evening delivery service would be convenient, something I'd pay a little extra for.
So I'm just wondering what I'm missing, and why there is no such service offered (that I know of)

it's all to do with the routing and moving the parcels the majority of distance wen the roads are quietest.
most parcel companies use hub and spoke operations....so the parcel is collected and taken to the end of the spoke....consolidated and moved to the hub........consolidated by hubs and sent there then broken out for the spoke and moved then sorted for delivery..
collection point(local depot) => RDC => NDC => RDC => local depot => destination
Because the supply chain is geared up to operate overnight and through into the morning and the majority is business post and effectively domestic parcel deliveries piggy back on business post.....therefore to implement evening deliveries would be very costly as it would require additional labour.

it's not an opportunity that's gone unnoticed by some of the companies that have the national and international infrastructure to make evening deliveries but at present they can't make the numbers work!!
why would they incur additional costs to deliver to a customer when it's convenient for the customer when the customer will go to the delivery company depot to collect the parcel when it's convenient to the customer.
Single parcels don't make money...the money is in being able to delivery several parcels to the same place at the same time.

If anyone seriously wants to further investigate this opportunity they're more than welcome to contact me as swmbo spent 6 months invesigating exactly this for one of the large mail companies of the UK.
Aparently it's the last mile that's the killer £££
