We need some short term resource, a friends son is doing an IT related degree just finshing his first year. Nice chap seems pretty stitched on and is learning the skills we need.

So we are talking about a summer job..

But what do I pay him?

Thoughts?

There was a feature about this on the BBC breakfast News this morning but I'll be buggered if I can remember it.

Basically prospective students and employers come together and negotiate a rate which is lower than the industry norm.

I'd be thinking a little more than £6 an hour, He could get that at a supermarket. Sure he's not going to get the experience but if you're likely to want his skills in the future then I'd guess £7 to 8 would be better.

But in the future he would be alot more expensive!!

Also stacking shelves for £6/h or working in an office doing something I assume he enjoys (why would he do a degree in it?) for £6/h.

What is he actually being employed to do? You mention IT degree so I'd guess that?

Good question.. smile

He'll be adding content to sites, a little html and basic php, if he is up for it then there will be some .net, sharepoint, sql. IT really depends what he is up for..

We have some good, interesting projects on the go with some interesting household names so stuff that will be great on his CV.

I'd suggest 16-20k range, it really depends on many factors. Probably around 60-80% of the market rate if he's only going to be around for a few months AND he's a *student*.
