I am invoicing a company for services my company has supplied. Part of the agreement is that I can also charge them for overnight accomodation on top of a daily rate.

The place I have been staying is not VAT registered whereas my company is.

So the question is...when I invoice how do I treat a non VAT registered expense. I'm guessing that my invoice should show daily rate X number of days worked, sub total, VAT and then expenses and finally the Invoice total and that I shouldn't be adding VAT to an expense?

Thanks for any help!

don't you have a line for each part of the invoice with columns for net of vat // vat // gross

line 1 is your cost with all 3 columns completed

line 2 is accom with zero vat

Have a look at this thread, courtesy of Eric Mc. You charge VAT on the total amount, irrespective of whether the accommodation charges VAT or not.

Thanks for the help but I'm not sure it's the same situation. If no VAT was charged to me it doesn't feel right for me to add VAT. I'm guessing in the example quoted VAT was charged on the items the subcontractor then claimed as an expense in which case I'd agree that it would be charged.

Pretty sure you still add VAT. I backcharged a couple of flights to a customer last month and still added VAT.

You still add VAT. It's so fecking weird as to be comical but that's how it goes.

You charge the VAT because YOU are VAT registered. If you want to highlight the recovery of your business' costs on your sales invoices that does not obviate the fact that you are billing your customers for the service you are providing them.
