I take it you mean a letter to be used for promoting or selling something - some more info would be helpful, is it a product or service, business or consumer audience. A book I like is one by Drayton Bird - How to Write Sales Letters that Sell - but it is consumer biased.

Go and buy 'Geurilla Marketing'... hell, I'd say the ideas in that book are responsible for 90% of our growth cool

That marketing letter should be an integral part of a whole campaign yes

Bit of both really.

Plan is to send them an introductory email\letter and then follow up with a telephone call a day or so later which I can then refer to rather than saying i'm calling from XYZ and I'd like to introduce you to blah blah blah.

I thought maybe this way, I could call them and refer to the email and then discuss various ways in which we can help them with their requirements.

Being old fashioned I would always suggest a letter rather than email, unless the topic is very related to electronic marketing. An email is far too easy to delete, at least a letter gets a second glance before being filed under 'R'.

From experience, best to wait about a week for follow up calls - if you do it too soon people may have it in an unread pile still if they actually have any interest, not too long, however or they will have forgotten you. The difficulty is making it memorable as the recipient will no doubt be receiving other mail and yours has to stand out, are you considering including anything in with the letter?
