Hi

I have a niece who is following a two year course at College in IT and she has approached me regarding doing work experience with my company. Sounds fine so far as we develop software and various other technology so it fits the course.

She was thinking a day a week as this fits in with the college course.

Questions

1. As an Employer what do I need to do
2. What is the usual pay rate for this (Assume minimum wage upwards)
3. Is there a specific body for this to formalise it
4. Any other info I should know

I am keen on this as it will give her practical knowledge and also help her CV. If she does well and is interested there may even be a full time post afterwards.

Any help gratefully received.

You dont have to pay for work experiance.

If you want pay, the minimum wage only applies to those over 18.

Well she is over 18 and I think part of the experience of work is to get paid for it.

The thing is I am wondering if there is some kind of national scheme for this that I need to sign up to.

Why not get her to speak to the College? They should know if they have done it before. Failing that Businesslink might help.

£105 maximum per week, otherwise tax implications kick in.. We took on my nephew for 5 days.. Spoke to our accountant who then advised us of the maximum per week, so didn't go over that. Of course you could top that up using your own funds.
