I am thinking of implementing Google Adwords but have had a look at google trends, but it isn't conclusive.

If you were searching for somewhere to buy (in quantities of 5000 units and up) glass bottles, glass jars and matching closures, what terms would you google for?

it is a tricky one, as I would have never thought of those.

I will have a play with trends tomorrow, but reckon they will come quite low.

I was thinking:

glass bottles / jars
glass bottle manufacturer

The keywords people would type are as you have typed e.g. 'glass bottles', 'glass jars'. The problem is you won't know whether they want one or one thousand. It's just the risk you take.

If you can't sell in quantities of less than 5000, all you can do is include that fact in the ad text to dissuede people looking for lower quantities from clicking on your ad.

i.e.

Bulk Glass Bottles UK
Buy glass bottles in quantities
of 5000 plus in the UK.

A company I dealt with used to come above his competitors, if you typed in any competitors name, or a product trademark name that the competitors sold. I've no idea how they managed it.

Type in your 10 main competitors in the packaging industry. You should be up there on the first page every time.

Bid on all the terms. The more generic ones like "bottles" should have lower bid amounts placed while putting high bids on the ones you really want and can help like "bulk bottles for trade".

I think a lot of respondents to this thread are giving internet users far too much credit.

People search incredibly simplistically and you should acknowledge and target yourself at that. You might WANT them to type 'Bulk trade glass bottles' into Google but they won't; they'll just type 'bottles' or, if you're lucky, 'glass bottles'.

Paying for anything more will be paying for what you would type in a perfect world when you were your own customer. But it's not and you're not.

Secondary alternatives might be 'wine botles' or 'milk bottles' or whatever use a lot of your bottles are aimed at.

I agree as above. I think people search for glass bottles and bottles (certainly google trends testify to this). What it doesn't tell me is whether the people that we want to see our site would search so generally, or would they have the intellect to search for glass bottle manufacturer?

The latter is probably more so. That said, glass bottles is the most used term for site that is directed to our traffic through google.

You can easily find out what people are searching for by doing the following:

  • Create your AdWords account
  • Get a list of generic terms like "bottles" etc,
  • Write some specific ads which include terms like "bulk orders"
  • Choose a low daily budget and allow the account to run for a week or 2
  • Once you have done this you can run a "Search Query Report" from you AdWords account - this will show you what terms people have actually searched for when they clicked your AdWords ad. It will show things like:
"bulk buying bottles", "1235 impressions", "12 clicks"

This will then allow you to see what people are searching for and then fully target these keywords with personalised ads.

Have fun!!
