Anyone able to recommend a good webhost who supports ASP.Net 3.5? Ideally uk based, decent uptime, competively priced etc.

Dunno if they support what you're looking for, but I've found www.register1.net very very good (dedicated server) and they are run by a PH mr Jamie Beeston who'll be along shortly i'm sure!

As WTD says - Register1 is the way to go .......

Run by PHer Jamie - and you can be pretty sure he'll be along here at some stage.

Rest assured - there's probably about 100+ PHers who all use him - myself included hosting about 12+ sites for me.

They don't seem to offer much on windows? I did have a look...

Finding anyone with 3.5 rather than asp.net 2.0 seems tricky despite it having been out for quite a while.

For Windows hosting you'd just need a Register1 Dedicated Server (From £49 a month for a QuadCore 2.4 Ghz with 250GB HDD and 1GB Ram)

We don't offer windows virtual hosting, partly as the demand isn't there, partly as customer arent willing to pay the requisite amount to pay for the additional licensing costs, and party as so many kiddie hosts use pirate versions and so can knock it out under 'cost'

Drop me a mail via profile if you have any queries though.

smile This is why we dont offer Windows hosting, noone is prepared to pay the requisite price for it!

Amen that, I used to have adsl at home with them, never an issue.
Even when I called them to leave them, my call was over within about 5 mins, this included getting a mac number.

Ahh, but the actual license cost for Windows server isn't very high - we offer our Windows hosting for the same price as our Linux hosting.

Is this some sort of policy change then? Last time I asked you (because it's somthing I'm going to do one way or another) the cost of 2k8 Web Server, was factored into the monthly cost for the first few months. At the time I remember speaking to someone that said Win 2k8 was due to be added to your dedi configurator within the week. That was months ago!

FWIW, the cost of the licence for me is not the issue. More the issue is either that I pay for something that someone else owns (the licence), or that someone else holds something intangible that I own and paid for! That's mainly on the basis that posession is nine tenths of the law.

To a large degree virtual hosting circumvents much of this difficulty, becuase ownership and benefit (of the licence) are clear, but the reality is that many people who are doing windows stuff will only be supported on a dedi, because such a proportion of their site is going to be binaries, rather than scripts.

To my mind the difficulty I have with your terms of business are that (not explicity) you expect the the client who rents a dedi to behave like a user of a virtual host, with respect to the platform licence on the machine they rent. I appreciate that the practicalities of this situation are difficult, but it could easily be cleared up with some simple statements on your website.

Like perhaps, words to the effect of....

"If you buy an operating system/licence for your dedicated server, it will be returned to you as and when your contract is terminated or otherwise expires"

The alternative is simply that the individual who rents the hardware, pays less for the licence in a short period, but never owns it, on the basis of a given lifespan for the OS/licence.

If you were really smart, the client would automatically get ownership of the licence at the end of the useful life of the OS.

It's less about the cost of Windows itself, on SPLA it's not that much, it's more about the ongoing costs of SQL Enterprise.

I fear you're getting confused..

We'll happily provide Windows Dedicated Hosting on the Dedicated Servers (2008 should be added to the config by today) it's just Windows VIRTUAL hosting we don't offer.

Hope this clarifies.

Dilbert,

I fear you don't understand how the licensing situation works..

Providers LEASE the license from Microsoft, as part of the SPLA (Service Providers Licensing Agreement) they dont go out and 'buy a license with your money' as such the monthly fee charged is in turn to cover a monthly fee paid to Microsoft, once you quit paying, so does the Service provider, and the right to use the leased license stops.

It's not the same as going out and buying a copy of windows and then renting it out and keeping it at the end to rent to someone else..

I again hope this clarifies things.

btw, 2008 is live on the Dedicated Server Configurator

No. Possibly I don't, but I remember doing the sums a while back, comparing the cost of a dedicated server running linux (where presumably the licence cost is zero), and that of Win2K3, and I figured at the time the cost of the 2K3 licence would be paid within 9 months or something.

(My numbers might not be exactly right).

I suppose the way I looked at it, the lifespan of the licence ought to be greater than that, and to me it would be cheaper to buy the licence myself, and rent a server with no OS on it. Without wanting to be accusational (it's your business at the end of the day), it just felt like there was something a bit squiffy in all that.

I've not checked it out yet, but nice one on the update.

Oddly enough I'm just pulling all my payment stuff together at the moment, and that's the last of the webby stuff beyond the content, so it'll not be long now!!!

Even stranger is that now I look again, the OS doesn't seem to be factored into timescale at all, but it does seem to me that you're making a tidy sum out of someone elses licence!! I suppose it's like buying Mobil1 direct or through Halfords, but it certainly makes me think twice.

If I go to the OPC, I can at least take my own Mobil1.

It's always going to be cheaper to buy your own license, there is no way it could ever be anything less if you're in for anything but the short term?

What you need to understand is the provider doesnt GET the license, it never exists, they simply pass on (most) of the money you pay to M$, so they get nothing from it at the end either..

Windows 2008 Std costs £450ish.. at £25 a month rental that's 18 mths to make the money back on your own purchase (which Incidentally, you're able to do if you like!)

You make it sound like the Service provider is ripping the customer off, and it's just not like that, if it was then people would simply go elsewhere and we wouldn't be as successful as we are!
