We have a fairly big job to do for a out-of-town company that is new to us. For our security do you think it is OK to ask for the money for the materials on delivery and the half the remainder half way through the job, the rest on completion?

Yes definately.

In these times you cannot be too careful.

They may say no - in which case you've got to make a commercial decision of whether to do the job or not.

Might be worth trying to take up some trade references on them as well to help you make the decision.

To be honest something has made me twitchy (can't go into it) and I would have to decline the work if they said no.

My brother does a bit of builing work on the side and he has no probloem asking for materials costs upfront, as as oon as they arrive on site. I dont think anybody has ever objected.

Yes, we are starting to ask for 25 - 30% deposit up front, 50 - 60% on delivery of hardware and then balance on completion.
