Bought some gates from a sizeable Ltd. company today. Paid cash, and got a scraggy hand-written receipt.

No VAT number, but i've found the company in various internet business directories.

Can i find out their VAT number from somewhere other than said company?

All reciepts should have the vat number on if the company is UK registered.

Its the law i believe.

Assuming they are VAT registered.

How do you know they are sizeable?

Are they UK or EU based?

If they are VAT registered they should be quoting their VAT No. on their invoices. That is a legal requirement.

They may be limited but it doesn't mean they're VAT registered. Presumably you wish to claim back VAT, but if so why did you pay cash? That means you can't log it in your own books.

Were you charged VAT?

AS for finding out if they are VAT registered or their VAT number, telephone your local HMR&C office.

Thanks for replies guys.

I paid cash because cash on collection was their terms. I withdrew the cash in the morning from my business account, and my accountant lady has no problem tying up the cash withdrawl with the payment.

I suspect they are doing a cash in pocket job, but i want to reclaim the VAT naturally...

Why? If you can clearly show the source of the cash then why not?

'Cash' in this context implied no paperwork, to me at least, in the interests of getting a better price. But I think what they really meant by 'cash on collection' was 'payment on collection' as opposed to 'credit and pay in 30 days'

Anyway, back to the plot - why doesn't the OP want to ring up and ask 'What's your VAT number please?'
