What has happened to the royal mail in London over the last couple of years? IMO it is verging on the unusable what with the number of things that go missing or take weeks to arrive. Our postal delivery now comes at any time between 9am and 4.30pm.

Last week we sent out ~300 items to different people, and so far hardly any of them have arrived. Is there anyone at RM I can speak to to find out what has happened? I would assume not since they were sent normal mail, not recorded, but since so many have gone missing they must all be sitting in a pile somewhere???

So frustrating!!

Its not just London, we are having the same trouble on the south coast. We have had to claim back for 6 'guaranteed before 1' deliveries in the last two weeks! Plus over hundred letters that have just disappeared for a week or so then just re-appear. Its all very nice being able to claim back for the actual physical value of the letter but you can't claim back lost revenue, bank charges, time wasted etc. We have had to send our VAT return by courier so as to ensure it gets there and we don't get a penalty for someone elses incompetance! ranting

We live in a 'remote' area apparently, even though the sorting office is less than 2 mile away, so they won't deliver our post until there is a full round. If that means we have to wait two or three days for our post then thats just tough! Even then it arrives anytime between 12 and 3!

The Victorians seemed to manage it, and they didn't have computers.

There may be a connection between the two...

Our post still seems to arrive before mid-day but some stuff I've been waiting for never made an appearance. Which is especially unamusing because those were letters from HMRC.

I've gone to sending out everything important that I can't email by recorded delivery or at least some kind of trackable mail (Airsure mostly, because I do send a fair amount of mail abroad).

I dont think it will be long before it is opened up to competition. That will be ok if you are sending from W1 to SW1 but it will be a fortune to send from Lands End to John O'Groats.

The worst bit is their customer service when things do go wrong. Last year it took me 4 months to get them to pay up for a lost package which they had clearly delivered to the wrong address. They got quite shirty, and their CS suggested the intended recipient was lying ( a university), said the matter was closed and eventually I had to go to the Post Ombudsman.

They paid up, begrudingly and accepted it was their fault, and made a half hearted apology at the insistennce of the Ombudsman.

Our post now arrives anywhere from 0800 to 1500 which is a pain business wise. We have had to add a day to the service levels we provide to ensure stuff gets there. Oddly the best service is on a Saturday when postie finishes early!

What seems to be happening more and more is that the posties are being put under more pressure each and every day. What with there being only one delivery now, they have to wait and sort all the mail in one go. This explains in some way the lateness of the delivery, but does not explain the missing items. It may just be that there is too much to do, with not enough staff.

Too many managers, and not enough workers.

Considering the pitiful wage that they get, the pressure is immense. I run a Post Office in Devon with a delivery office attached, my posties are regularly leaving here at anywhere between 9:30 and 10:30, purely because of this scenario. I have 3 posties, one of which has now gone of sick with a serious condition (first time sick in 20 years), the other two have had to have knee operations. These two have been put on stage 1 warnings for their sick absence (operations) and the other will face this when he hopefully returns to work later this year. The business as a whole has got worse over the years.

I myself work for them for 21 years (PO Ltd side of things though), and left them 18 months ago, the amount of staff leaving albeit through voluntary redundacy (at the moment) is incredible, but it is the experienced staff that are leaving, which leaves inexperienced and untrained staff.
