Are there franchises available?

It just struck me as quite a recession proof industry... Only idle speculation at the moment smile

Gambling as an industry might be recession proof but your traditional high street/back of pub bookies have far more to worry about than recessions.

Erm, the internet?

Why bother wandering to the bookies when you can bet from the comfort of your desk/sofa?

True... I know little about gambling to be fair. Well, surely you offer better odds than the online places, or get your shop licensed to serve beer and have wenches walking about... I dunno, bit of imagination never hurt anyone smile

Odds are odds, theres some movement but not much, you've got to lay off the money you take in remember.

As for mixing booze and betting under the same roof, unlikely I would suggest.

As someone who understands this market very well, I would gve you some advice - Don't. Independent bookmakers are dropping like flies at the moment and the high street is dying a slow death, the only thing propping it up at the moment is the income from FOBTS (Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (Roullete Machines) ). An independent license is more expensive than any of the big 4 will pay and you will really struggle to compete once you are paying for pictures/odds/staff/overheads etc. Add to that the fact that you have no experience of the industry (you run a succesful cab firm IIRC?) and it's a sure road to the poorhouse!

Before anyone says it don't even bother with online, you will lose lot of money very very quickly.

The biggest gamblers are the poorest in society and often such people don't use the internet; not only for reasons of affordability, but also because their educational background suggests 'computers are difficult' and often their outlook on life just finds them disinteresting.

Since the Govt. changed the regulations on betting, particularly stopping local authorities having any 'say' in where betting shops can open, new bookies are flooding areas of high density, social housing; worse than Starbucks in London!

I know someone who is looking into Adult Gaming Centres and reckons a properly located one is a gold mine. Far easier and cheaper to run than a bookies. He visited one in the South East that were making £466 profit per machine and they had about 80 spread across 2 sites. The owner visited the sites once a year from his villa in Spain!

I assume thats like a gaming arcade where you have to be over 18? Over what period was the £466 made? Not really something I would be into, if they were in the right area to make money I'm guessing they would be in the right area for trouble, theft etc?

A big one has just opened in a main thoroughfare in my town (there are others in secondary positions but this really stands out both in terms of size and prime location).

Ironically, the former tenant of the premises was a major building society.

Maybe playing slot machines are a better consumer investment?

That was profit per week. You would need decent security but all the ones Ive seen have been run by one staff member who sits inside a secure booth. I understand the licensing costs have climbed dramatically and local authorities are not that keen on these type of business taking over shopping arcades and high streets.

You are only allowed a maximum of 4 FOBT's per shop. Obviously the more money that goes through them the more you will make. They are also quite expensive to run/maintain/buy outright if that is what you decide to do.

Those are the ones that have the £500 stake arent they?

I think most of the high st style centres have mostly older machines and fruit machines but I know absolutely nothing about the hardware.
