I'll start by saying I've never run a business, maybe I've been too risk averse, too comfortable and too secure in employment to make the first move. Its still an itch I desperately want to scratch and with a lot of research, preparation and sheer hard work I'm determined to make it work.

To start to get a feel for the figures, how is it best to go about locating premises? I have in mind an out of town licensed cafe with plenty of parking, inspired by a certain North West London establishment....

http://www.shopproperty.co.uk/ - Is pretty good for getting an idea of rent rates and rates payable. They have quite a lot of properties on there too.

the ace works because of its history, trying to do the same elsewhere from scratch will certainly be a challenge

good luck!

If you decide on an area it would be worth talking to the local surveying practices to see what they have. www.rics.org have a searchable database of surveyors.

Google is probably as good a tool as any, but again narrowing to specific areas would help in the search.
