Just after a little bit of help with this. My parents own a small 10 room hotel in newmarket. It is run using a door code system. We live half an hour away from the hotel and it is not staffed. So the guest phones up, we take their details and give them door codes for their room.

Anyway the majority pay by card and we take the payment at home before we tell them the code. but some opt to pay cash.

On saturday night i booked a man in and he wanted to pay cash, so i gave him the code and said pay the cleaner in the morinng. Anyway he gave me a false address and a story about not having his cards on him.

We're losing a fair bit over these runners. Does anyone know how we can find a way of knowing theyve left cash. I found a hotel in japan where the guest puts the note in a slot and it registers elsewhere so the owner knows what was paid.

Two options:

1) Make everyone pay before they get the code.

2) Accept that a few percent of people are not honest and you will get shafted.

Don't accept cash without taking a card as well. What would you do if a room was trashed?

I have many customers who want to pay in cash but I've always refused.......I always insist a credit card or bye bye!

Wouldn't it be better to have an honest Friend/Family member that could be on call or cash customers to pop round for you and you slip them a few quid a month..

What happens if there is a fire overnight, who is responsible for the guests?

Anyway, I guess this depends upon what proportion of your business is cash based.

If it is significant, then let the person in to his room but go straight over to get money off him.

Otherwise, card only.

I thought hotels now had an obligation to see ID if the person didn't pay by credit card: one of the anti-terrorist things?
