I need some advice regarding building a website

Quick question.

Is there such a thing as a going rate for a web developer (someone who can also deal with the graphic design aspects apart from the coding element)

I need a small sharp and stylish site built. Probably 6-8 pages max with high visual impact and login entry.

I have the material and the verbal messaging already, it's the visuals I need to concentrate on.

Question: where to start?

The prices vary hugely depending on their experience and often on how busy they are. If you PM me a bit more of a spec I can advise you on the people I believe would be worth approaching.

I've worked with 30+ web developers/designers in the past few years. A few have been excellent, a lot are good but unfortunately the majority have been pretty poor I'm afraid, it can be a bit of a minefield.

15 years ago I was teaching him Pascal and basic HTML. Now he's a professional web designer but always glad of extra work to pay for his growing family!

I can't deny some of the 'art' he has done has been pretty bizarre but, in his defence, all his commercial web design work has been for very serious companies.

If I were you I'd get a quote from a couple of developers. I'm in the process of getting a site done at the moment and you wouldn't believe how much the costs varied.

But also it's not just cost that is important, the team we went for had a reasonable cost (nowhere near the cheapest) but their work was excellent and you could tell they knew exactly what they were doing.
