Just wanted a few pointers on who to report a unregistered business to, have already contacted HMRC, is there any other organisations that would like to know?

Can i ask you why you want to grass them up? is it a personal or are they in direct competition with anything you do?

I'm just curious.

What do you mean by 'unregistered'? Unregistered for VAT? Unregistered by not being a limited company?.....

I just dont think its fair that whilst others bend over backwards to follow the variuos crap that is slapped on small businesses other seem to think they are some how above the law, also I am not in competition with this persons business

I don't understand also what you mean by unregistered?

I don't think there is a law that states a company has to be registered at companies house.

All they have to do is pay tax, after that it's their choice.

How is it not registered?

Is this person just doing cash jobs and not putting it through the books?

Are they not on the Central UK Business Register(all businesses must be on this: joke:P)

Do you mean he's not registered with the tax office?

Crikey 1000's of people have small businesses on fleabay dont pay tax - how many cab drivers, plumbers and tradesmen dont declare their full earnings.

Mate honestly, i know its not fair but put your efforts into what you do. Lifes a bh but getting angry at someone who hasn't declared some tax isn't worth getting into.

Its not fair how small business get treated in general with beauracratic legislation, it aint fair when MP's cream the system - get over it and move on and forget what other people are doing.

Well if you explain how you mean by unregistered it may well help.

Do you mean they are not registered with HMRC? Therefore not paying tax.

Then this is the most you can do, HMRC have more authority than god himself (not that he exists).

I think most were asking what did you mean 'unregistered' without that info then no one is probably the best answer you are going to get I'm afraid.

Edit to say 'too slow'

If you've really got it in for this "unregistered" trader then why not report them to the police as they probably don't have Employers Liability Insurance.

Also report them to the Performing Rights Society because you suspect they have a radio in their office being listened to by more than one person.

Report them to the council for selling goods from a suitcase without a traders license.

Report them to Health and Safety for not filling out a risk assessment form for running with a suitcase (when the council try to check their licence)

Report them to immigration for harbouring and employing illegal aliens

But really can you be @rsed to report them to all and sundry, which ultimately means that the public sector servants get to justify the red tape and spend more money than is recovered in investigating and probably identify another tax loophole that needs yet more legislation and red tape to close it.

If you want proper advice on who to tell about an unregistered business - you need to tell us on what database you've checked to see that they aren't registered and you also need to tell us what line of work this outfit are in.

Are you someone that reports everyone for everything (aka a Daily Mail reader)? Or do you have a personal vendetta against this trader?

P.S. I use the word trader as I presume they aren't a Ltd Company or LLP

Been there - got pi55ed off myself - you have my sympathy.

Letter supposedly from 'culprit' to all parties, declaring their business activity, and asking for guidance how they should register ;-) Put on rubber mits, grab next bin they put out, and you'll have bank statements, council tax bills, telephone bills, etc. Quote relevant account numbers, and ask if all accounts are OK for their business use ;-)

Target various departments of HMRC.

Local planning authorities, if running a business from home.

H&SE if any materials or storage.

Insurance...not sure ?!

Local council if 'commercial' rubbish is being collected.

Car - write to DVLA re using your car (reg plate etc) for commercial purposes.

National Insurance....write to them.

Make it a hobby for a month, use library WWW access so your IP address is hidden...setup hotmail address (as culprit)...

if you post without giving much details, then its hardly suprising that you may get a few speculating and offering perhaps more juicy reasons why you want to dob on them.

chill - clearly you are still sensitive over this issue. Plenty more fish in the sea.
