We've just been talking in the office about suppliers that we have accounts with. These include national chains of trad suppliers (builders merchants, electrical wholesalers etc.)

I've been to one such place today and bought around £250 worth of goods, using a purchase order number that I scribbled on a post-it before I left the office and the company address.

It got us thinking..... If someone was dishonest enough, they could walk into a wholesaler, give a made-up P/O number, sign their name as M.Mouse and walk out with hundreds of pounds worth of stuff. If they did this to several suppliers within a short period of time they could have thousands of pounds of products for free.

This system, relying purely on honesty has been in place at all of the places I've worked.

What steps do people take to prevent this from happening? Who would be liable for the cost of the products? (assuming the "thief" could not be found)
