Looking at doing decent home stereo/AV installs; spec a system for someone, buy it in and have it installed, including doing tricky bits like chasing wires in walls etc.

Also scope to expand into home automation / networking / CCTV / business stuff as well - perhaps making our own equipment to manage it.

Could we really compete with the specialised AV shops that do this service themselves? Obviously word of mouth is key but might be difficult starting off.

Also, are there any accreditations that might be worth getting?

I have come across specialist audio consultants in the past (pre home cinema days). they would come into a house and advise on layout and best kit for the space and budget - usually prior to decoration.

I wouldn't consider buying the kit in as most people at this level will want to test the gear first which would normally require the setting up of a studio or listening room. (I also understand that the margins are very low on all but the very high end of kit)

Might be worth you providing your services via local stores that they or the end customers buys.

So Steve, as we're about 400 miles apart, is it something worth looking into? I'd certainly find doing it interesting, I don't fancy getting into "shifting boxes" so hopefully could guide customers towards what to buy but let them get the equipment and install it (properly) for them ..
