I know you can't claim for travel to your usual place of work as an employee but at the weekend I was flabbergasted when my doctor daughter told me that her deanery are expecting her to travel 75 miles each way each day at her own cost. I asked where he usual place of work was and it seems that shifts depending upon where her 3-6 month rotation is based although there is nothing in writing to this effect, just what an administrator tells her.

If the deanery won't pay and are unclear about where her usual place of work is, is she at liberty to choose her own 'usual place' of work and look to recover any additional travel costs through her self assessment? To date she has been 1 mile, 15 miles and 35 and 55 miles from home on her various rotations but this latest 75 mile one takes the biscuit.

I'd certainly be looking at establishing a "usual" place of work and claiming under the Self Assessment system.

Thanks Eric, I get a sense that HMRC might do very well out of their current purge on doctors, as they seem to have a swings and roundabouts attitude of not claiming some stuff because they gain elsewhere.

I am thinking HMRC won't take the same attitude!

Was looking into this just a week ago. If you haven't read this already it may be helpful although refers only to 12 monrh rotations. They say the hospital where you work on roation is your permanent workplace. On-call milage is a different matter I think?

That looks good but the 12 month rotation (and the language) looks outdated. My daugter has been at 3 hospitals in the past year, one 100 yards from home, one 40 miles away and the latest 75 miles away.
