For a side business.

SEO company may be able to help improve our SE rankings. Not looking for people quoting OTT prices.

Any suggestions of a UK company ?

I can't actually suggest a company, but, considering the nature of their work perhaps you could try searching for seo companies in google. Obviously, the company at position one would be a fairly good choice if you were going for success rate.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Just because the company ranks well in google doesn't mean they will be good.

They've obviously done well to rank high, but that doesn't mean they will do the same for you. They may have just spent ages optimising their site, doesn't mean they'll do the same for yours for the money! I've spoken to a well known SEO company before and for £x hundred pounds they just submit you to a whole load of page rank 1 sites, whereas other companies will help create content that gets relevant links.

Agreed. Hence why I posted this here for people to see that have had "client experience" with a certain SEO company which they may be willing to pass on to me ?

I have also submitted the site to various search engines. Now I want to get someone on the SEO a bit more.

Whenever I am buying the services of outside professional, I always try to have a basic understanding of what Im shopping for. It makes for better buying decissions. can anyone link to good reading for the layman to grasp a reasonable understanding of the black art of SEO?

Surely a good SEO company will do the work, show the results and then get paid on those results? What about maintaining good search position over time?

Well, in our business (business IT software) we don't get paid until we have delivered, so I don't see the difference. We certainly would not pay up front before we saw what we were getting.

I doubt there is any SEO company like that. The way Google displays results changes constantly. Often you could be on the first page for a long time then suddenly be on page 4, then back again a few days later.

SEO also takes time, and like someone said, it's also about maintaining position. If you paid an SEO company to do some work it may take a few weeks to take affect.

Plus if you were thinking of paying on performance results, how do you determine them? Say you run a bike shop website. Would you be trying to rank high for 'new bikes' (very very hard) or when someone types in the company name (relatively easy).

I think it's hard to determine the absolute effectiveness of an SEO company, as there are many outside variables. By no means am I saying they aren't worthwhile, but if they tried to predict what they could give you in advance, it wouldn't be accurate. Which is why I doubt any would ever do that.

Specify a number of different search criteria that you are happy with and have the SEO guarantee that the site will appear on the first page of results.

You can not guarantee SEO results as its at the SE discretion where you sit at any given time. You also cant charge on results, its like saying to a doctor that he will not be paid unless you live, SEO's could do everything right and you still might not sit where you want.

Definitely worth a shout, Gareth's just started working on our site and I'm very impressed so far (based on my SEO knowledge) but too early to comment on results.

There is also Chim Girl on here I believe who works for an SEO company.
Quite a few on here doing this sort of thing. Call them up and take the one you're most comfortable/happy with I guess.

so why don't you pay for your food in a restaurant when you order instead of after you've eaten it?

That's what I'm trying to get at, it seems these companies will take your money and basically run leaving you with a dissapointment.

Louis, out of interest what does your company do? I'm just trying to gauge how competitive your ideal keywords would be in google.
