Hi,
Looking into getting a website written and designed for selling photographs online that would link into a sql database back end. Working on a spec at the moment, but will involve giving people individual logins and passwords to look at their photographs from events which we will have to upload to the site as well as possibly uploading their own photographs to use on products.
Needs to manage stock levels well and handle a lot of transactions and images.
Can anyone recommend a company that might have experience in something similar or any web shop systems that may be able to be customised to handle this.
I would prefer to get recomendations of companies, but I'm sure there will be lots of people on here that are involved in website design/programming, I am particularly interested in hearing from people that can either do everything or specialise in the back end as im more concerned about getting this sorted. Also, I would prefer an established company with more than 1 person to minimise risks of project not getting finished.

Sounds like an interesting idea, and I'd be interested partnering you, but I am a one-man show (which goes contrary to your stated preferences). However, I am good at what I do and I know deadlines matter.

I also designed and produced all the sites above end-to-end (and not just the back-end work). I work solely with PHP, which sounds ideal for the kind of thing you want (some great image manipulation libraries are available for PHP).

Does all that you need, and they handle the printing and dispatch direct to the end customer and handle the card payments (yes, they take a margin, but the absence of hassle is the clincher for me)
You can skin the site easily, upload photos easily, password protect the galleries easily, watermark easily, etc. All very easily (are you getting the theme!)
Very good uptime & customer support nearly as good as Register1 as well!

Slightly O/T, but from theimagefile's front page, I struggle to see exactly what they're offering. Are they purely a stock provider or something else as well? They have a stock library that you can submit images to (and set your own pricing), but I use them for my photography site (www.apictureofsuffolk.com) that is hosted entirely via the imagefile - created from one of their template designs etc.Why not sign up for a trial account and see how you get on?

Got an account with them for a small elemet of our business and does work ok for that but for the new site we want full control over it which you can't really get with them or other off the shelf solutions. We want to develop a site to our exact spec.
Thanks for the other suggestions, may not get a chance to investigate further for another 10 days as off on holiday in a couple of days. Any more suggestions welcome.
