A consultant says they will charge mileage on top of their day-rate (if they're out visiting people on the client's behalf etc), along with any other costs etc. Is it reasonable to charge the full 40 pence per mile, or would people expect to be charged a fraction of that, and let them make the difference back on their own backs?

I think it's pretty standard to charge travel. Including mileage. That rate sounds reasonable. My current mileage is charged at 42p.

Cheers, I was thinking along those lines.

We charge the 40p, even if the staff member has done over 10,000 miles that year and is only getting 25p.

I wonder how much more than 40p/mile it *actually* costs to run the average car?

quite some £££ when you work it out ...hence most companies that employ people doing 10K-20K miles a year will have some form of car allowance/car scheme

the .40p rates that the tax man says you can have tax free are to cover pure running costs, not the purchase/finance costs of a car ..and they expect you to be driving something remotely sensible rather than a 4.2V8 or suchlike LOL wink

40p all the way for me, regardless of how many miles I have done that year. I work on the basis that I am unlikely to achieve 10,000 miles for any one client, so they all start from scratch. The way petrol prices are going up 40p is starting to look like it needs to increase as well tbh.

I charge my mileage out at whatever I feel I can get away with.
