I want to buy a domain name which is availble but I am a little concerned that after searching various companies they all offer the domain for sale/rent, so who actually owns it.

What raised my concern was when searching I typed in my web address and one company states that it is owned by them and they can transfer for free.

So can anyone poimt me in the direction of a good company that sell domain names.

Anyone used this service:

www.GBBO.co.uk

If you just want the name use the cheapest. If you want ot use it in conjunction with a website, email etc then use a reputable one like Register1.

You'll struggle to find anyone that much cheaper than Register1.net anyway.

Edit: Also, the really cheap ones have lots of hidden fees like stinging you hard for transferring away when you find out how crap their service is.

You never really own it as such. Simply put, use Register1 or 123-reg or the like and you'll be fine.

Indeed, I'd say that anything you have to renew every year or two is more rented than owned.

Generally you lease it, pay per year and you get the option to extend up to 10 years (rolling).
