Got a couple of interviews coming up, and my SD has decided to forget.

I am stepping in, and having interviewed lots of people, I know the basics, but any questions anyone uses when interviewing prospective salespeople?

Ask them to "pitch" to you. Give them 5 minutes to make a case as to why they should work there. Tell them in advance and give them the freedom to do what they want (Power Point, Samples, etc.). As they are applying for a sales position, the first thing they should be able to sell is themselves.

Tim, have misplaced your email address from when we last spoke. I have some recommended lines of questioning somewhere, PM me your email address and I will get them across to you.

Classic one I had was "Give me 5 uses of a brick" is they are a consultative sales person they will probe i.e ask you questions before giving an answer.

Also ask them to sell you a pencil, your come back should be that you have a pen, you know if there a good sales person in that they question you and ask if your happy with the fact that you cany undo e.g erase what they have written or drawn with a pen, and therefore they need a pencil.

i have loads of these, let me know if you want more.

Ask them if they are a good sales person. They will answer yes. Then ask them why they want to work for you when no doubt there are better paid positions in the world selling more exciting things.

Ask them what there view of earning £150k per year is? They may see that as small beer or unobtainable - to either response you can ask "why?"

Most sales people in my experiance are both lazy and crap in equal measure. The good ones by that I mean the really good ones, don't look for work.

Most sales roles include a 'script' or process. Do you have part of the sales patter that you could give them 10 minutes to learn and then role play them? By far and away, this is the most insightful part of the recruitment process for me.

yep, interview over. We will have a second one I figure, so I might chuck in the bike one if I am feeling very harsh!
